IRS Announces 2010 Contribution Limits

The Internal Revenue Service and the Social Security Administration have issued the cost of living increases for qualified retirement plans for 2010. Please note that the 401(k) elective deferral limit (i.e., 402(g)) and the catch-up contribution limit remain unchanged for 2010, as will other limits.

In the past several years, the annual participant notice requirements that plan sponsors need to keep track of have increased at a frantic pace due to two pieces of legislation: The Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA) and the Qualified Default Investment Alternative (QDIA) regulations issued in 2007. IRS Issues Guidance on 2009 Required Minimum Distribution Waiver
On September 24, 2009, the Internal Revenue Service provided additional guidance for retirement plan administrators, plan participants and retirees regarding recent legislation affecting required minimum distributions (RMD). Previously, the Worker, Retiree, and Employer Recovery Act of 2008 waived required minimum distributions for 2009 from certain retirement plans. Notice 2009-82 provides relief for participants who have already received 2009 RMDs this year.
